Seit 35 Jahren habe ich einen Ohrwurm, den ich zum Untertitel dieses Blogs gemacht habe. Es ist nett, den gesamten Text über die Jahre immer wieder zu lesen, und zu sehen, wie ich ihn im Laufe der Jahre anders lese. Angehäuft mit Assoziationen und anderen Gewichtungen.
Life of Surprises was not part of the original 1985 running order of Protest Songs; it dates from the demo sessions in Lynx Studios for From Langley Park to Memphis in late 1986. This recording was first released as a B‑side on the single of Nightingales before its inclusion on Protest Songs. In his review of Protest Songs, Stuart Maconie considered the song to be a potential hit single. Maconie was proven right in 1992 when the song gave its name to Prefab Sprout’s first best of collection, A Life of Surprises: The Best of Prefab Sprout and was released as a single to promote it. Life of Surprises became one of the band’s greatest successes on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 24.

So schön Alben sind, aber das war immer auch ein Problem, wenn Songs nicht so richtig passten (Hey Jude, How Soon Is Now, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Shake The Desease …). Als Single wirkte ein Song immer so etwas verloren, weil man immer Alben durchgehört hat, einfach weil es umständlich war, eine Scheibe wegen eines Songs aufzulegen oder reinzuschieben. Deshalb packte man diese Songs auf die nächste Singles-Collection. „The Singles“ waren mitunter sinnvolle Alben, verhasst unter Fans, weil das die Bands auf ihre Hits reduziert. „Demos und B‑Sides“ war dann wieder oft zu halbgar. Ich kenne nur wenige, wirklich gute und eigenständige Zusammenstellungen neben den regulären Studio-Alben. Thema für einen eigenen Post (Auch ChatGPT findet: „Ah, now that’s a great question.“).
Zurück zum Ohrwurm.
Die ursprüngliche Version von Protest Songs enthielt den Song nicht. Erst als viele Bootlegs von Protest Songs im Umlauf waren, wurde das Album veröffentlicht, dieses Mal mit Life of Surprises drauf.
